Objective: Thumb sucking
Program 7
Response Definition - Thumb sucking is defined as any occurrence of CK's thumb in his mouth.
Treatment Procedure - CK should be presented with an enjoyable activity, yet one that typically sets the occasion for his thumb sucking behavior, i.e., watching a movie. He should be told that it is time to practice being a big boy and keeping his hands in his lap. The movie should be started and CK's appropriate hand behavior, e.g., keeping them in his lap, should be praised at a very high rate. At the first occurrence of thumb sucking behavior, the movie should be turned off and CK should be directed to engage in another activity, preferably one that is not highly preferred. Please do not pair turning off the television with asking CK to come to his worktable. When the television is turned off, lease say in a neutral voice that big boys do not suck their thumbs while watching movies and that you will practice being a big boy again later. This program will continue until the entire team records a marked decrease in CK's thumb sucking behavior.
Data Collection - Please record the number of opportunities per day that CK has to practice watching a movie or engaging in another highly preferred activity that elicits thumb sucking. In addition, please record the amount of time CK is able to engage in the preferred activity before it is ended as a consequence for thumb sucking.
